Bruce L. Bird, Ph.D., CEO

Dr. Bird became Vinfen’s Chief Executive Officer in 2008. Before his appointment as CEO, Dr. Bird served as COO from 2003 until 2008. As CEO, he directs the operations of Vinfen’s 350 programs that employ more than 2,000 staff members.

Among his areas of focus are:

  • Improving quality and outcomes management systems
  • Improving systems for financial performance
  • Developing new program models for selected populations
  • Increasing the clinical capacity of the organization
  • Helping to initiate a development program
  • Partnering with academic institutions to develop an applied research agenda

Prior to joining Vinfen, Dr. Bird served as the CEO of North Suffolk Mental Health for eight years. North Suffolk is a large community behavioral healthcare center that has strong affiliations with Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Bird is a licensed psychologist, and has served as a member of the associate faculty of the Psychiatry Dept. of the Harvard Medical School and the faculty and staff of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He has produced numerous articles and is active in applied research. Current research activities include the site principal investigator on a five-year National Institute of Mental Health study of an innovative intervention to promote health and fitness in adults with serious mental illness.  Dr. Bird also sits on many boards and organizations including Association for Behavioral Health (ABA), Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers (ADDP), and Massachusetts Association of Mental Health (MAMH).

He currently serves on the Massachusetts Medicaid 1115 Waiver Planning Advisory Committee and the Massachusetts Minimum Data Standards Project (for Behavioral Health Electronic Records)

Dr. Bird received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Houston in 1975.

Over the past 30 years, he has lent his expertise to many human service organizations, including the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Corporations of Massachusetts (vice chair of the Board) and the Massachusetts Council of Human Service Providers (Board member).
