When I’m Not Alone is the story of Sam Durbin who was born female but raised as a male by his father. Sam experienced unspeakable abuse, never learned to read or write, and drifted in and out of institutions. Homeless and alone when he found the Clubhouse, Integrity House, he learned to read and write and advocate for himself and other individuals with disabilties.

The film examines the nature of responsiblity of parents and children, of physicians and patients, and of society and citizens towards those afflicted with severe mental illness.
