Vinfen’s Fred Verro honored by AHC

On May 1, Fred Verro, program director at Vinfen’s Coventry Street Community Program, received the 2008 Medoff AIDS Housing Award from the AIDS Housing Corporation (AHC). Coventry Street is an HIV/AIDS residential support program in Roxbury, Mass.

This award is presented annually by the AHC to honor individuals who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to AIDS housing.

Verro became program director at Coventry Street in 1997 and soon recognized that the program was focused primarily on dying and death. His response was to re-establish the program, working with staff to create an atmosphere where life was celebrated. In the environment of Coventry’ Street’s clean and sober standards, he also instituted practices for treating client relapses.

Over the past 12 years, Verro has developed a program at Coventry Street that supports and assists people, many of whom are ex-offenders, struggling with the health implications of HIV/AIDS and and drug addiction.

Verro, who joined Vinfen in 1993, is currently a member of the Boston/MetroWest HIV/AIDS Service Coordination Collaborative, where he is a participant in the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Workshop. He is also a member of the Roxbury Community Health Neighborhood Association, which is focused on providing a variety of health initiatives for the people of Roxbury.

Prior to working at Vinfen, Verro served as a psychologist for the Department of Mental Health for 10 years.
