How Participation in a Vinfen Program Improved My Life
My life has improved in several different ways because of my participation in the Vinfen program at Amory Street in Boston. This program is based upon helping people coping with the many problems and complexities of those living with HIV/AIDS. Since coming to the program in October of 1997, my life has improved significantly.
This Vinfen program has offered me better and much more affordable housing than I had previously. I love my apartment, which would be much more expensive in the private real estate market today.
The Amory Street program has also exposed me to different people and different cultures. This has truly helped me to understand other people and other cultures in the program and outside the program. Sharing facts about our medical conditions has also increased my knowledge of this disease. The program offers many social activities as well as being a source of knowledge for the many resources available to those afflicted by HIV/AIDS.
Another important aspect of my participation in the Amory Street program is the wonderful support, help and understanding I have received from the counselors, director, and other Vinfen staff members. Because of their support, my health - both physically and psychologically - has improved greatly.
The staff has also helped me to achieve my goals. Since coming to Amory Street, I have finished my course requirements and have obtained an Associate’s Degree in International Business. Due to the support and understanding from this program, I am now pursuing a degree in Behavioral Sciences (Psychology/Sociology). I eventually would like to work with people, who, like myself, have suffered vision loss in some way or another. I want to thank Vinfen for making this possible. Because of the support, understanding, encouragement and love I have received at Amory Street, I feel my life is now definitely headed in the right direction.
