From December 2007 to April of this year, students from the Human Services Bachelor’s
degree program at Springfield College volunteered at Vinfen’s Hancock Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The students spent several months making community connections and raising funds
through donations from the Boston Police Athletic League,

The students visited Hancock Center residents every Thursday night to play bingo and every Tuesday for coffee hour, current events and group crossword puzzles.
In addition, the Springfield College students created a small library for the residents.

At the completion of the program on April 11, there was a farewell pizza party. To ensure continuation of the program, the students recruited new volunteers and solidified long-term relationships with community groups in the area.

“We're so grateful for the time these students spent with us,” said Glory Wideman, Hancock Center activity director. “The residents really enjoyed their company. “Not only that, but they started an excellent program that will continue to run.”
