Vinfen Connecticut started transforming lives in February, 2000. At that time, Vinfen decided to create a local presence in Connecticut that truly reflected our approach to small-scale, highly personalized and community-minded care.
From the start, we were determined to meet the state’s growing need for mental retardation and psychiatric rehabilitation services with Connecticut people and Connecticut solutions. At the same time, however, we’ve been able to leverage resources from our parent organization in Massachusetts and put them to work for Connecticut.
Vinfen initially operated three residential homes, but quickly grew to the 13 homes we currently manage in Windsor, Windsor Locks, Suffield and Enfield. Vinfen also runs the Vocational Training Center, a community-based day program located in Windsor Locks, as well as three suported living arrangements. All of these programs maintain the highest possible level of state licensing.
By design, these are small, neighborhood settings where we are able to place a premium on individualized attention. We are especially proud of our work with Hispanic/Latino populations, providing culturally relevant, bi-lingual support to a constituency that comprises 62 percent of the people we serve.
As part of our commitment to Connecticut, we also utilize our in-state resources to provide day and residential programs for school-age children and teens. Vinfen also delivers training services to our staff of 80 as well as our external partners through our Training Center located in Windsor.
We are proud to report some very tangible outcomes. When Vinfen Connecticut started, less than 50 percent of the individuals we served were employed. Today, every one the individuals we serve is involved in a productive day/vocational program. Only one person had a therapist in the beginning; today every individual who requires therapeutic support is provided access to this resource. Our approach has helped reduce overall hospital costs, saving money for Connecticut taxpayers.
